• A private not-for-profit, acute care facility that has served the community since 1912.

• Received a three-year Accreditation from JCAHO; along with the following accreditations: AABB and CAP for the Laboratory; ACSCOC for the Cancer Program; ACR and FDA for Radiology/Mammography.

 
Patient Encounters

• Governed by a 17-member Board of Directors composed of area citizens who receive no payment for their services.

• Patient Encounters: Inpatient admissions - 7,527; Emergency Care Center visits - 37,512; Outpatient visits - 44,117, Express Care visits - 6,991.

• Average daily census - 65.9 patients, excluding newborns.  Average length of stay - 3.2 days.

• As of the pay period ending on June 28, 2005, SMH was employing 924 workers, including full-time, part-time, and float pool.  Approximately 85% of all employees live in St. Mary's County.

• Medical staff of 273, including 74 active, 111 courtesy, 38 consulting, 25 Allied Health and 25 Emeritus physicians...Average physician age is 50...overwhelming majority are board certified.

• Annual operating budget of $81 million.

• Receiving a majority of its income from third party payors as shown below in the Payor Mix chart:

Patient Encounters  

• Provided more than $4.3 million in uncompensated care to the citizens of St. Mary's County over the past fiscal year.

• A total of 1,005 babies delivered at St. Mary's Hospital during the year.

• In Maryland hospitals, average charge per case as of April 2005 - $9,250; average charge per case at St. Mary's Hospital - $5,487.
