MaryLou Watson, MS, RN –
Vice President for Nursing
MaryLou Watson accepted the role as Vice President for Nursing in November 2006. In this position, Ms. Watson is responsible for directing nursing services throughout the hospital and establishing quality standards for nursing care, treatment and services.
“As the Nursing profession struggles with a nationwide shortage, we must become more aware of the issues and concerns that our front-line nurses face everyday and identify ways to enhance career satisfaction,” said Watson. “Giving nurses opportunities to be in charge of their practice, championing autonomy and decision making are essential if we are to retain nurses - from the new grad to the seasoned professional - and also if we are to attract capable, bright individuals to consider a career in nursing,” she added.
With those thoughts in mind, Watson assures a firm direction in the solid development of the Councilor structure within Nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital to include a Nursing Practice Council (NPC). With a NPC, nurses will have the mechanism to review practice issues, review best practices in nursing care, set standards for SMH nursing, and strongly feel the professional components of autonomy and self-direction. Other councils within this structure will have dedicated foci with similar levels of professional satisfaction. Watson continued, “I look forward to working with the nurses at SMH to guide and develop this structure and then watch the nurses make it happen!”
Ms. Watson joined St. Mary’s Hospital from Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland where she served as the Vice President of Patient Care Services and the Chief Nursing Officer. Prior to her work with Southern Maryland she served as Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, Maryland.
MaryLou received her nursing degree from the University of Maryland School of Nursing and her Master of Administrative Sciences from The Johns Hopkins University. She brings over 30 years of experience in nursing to St. Mary's Hospital.
Watson currently lives in Severna Park, MD, with her husband and three daughters, but is in the process of acquiring a home in Leonardtown, MD. She is an active power and sail boater and enjoys gardening, biking and hiking. |
