Cardiovascular Disease Community Resource

Did you know?

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, has been the leading cause of death in St. Mary’s County since at least 1983. CVD currently kills more residents than cancer, traffic crashes, and suicides combined, and the County CVD death rate exceeds the state average.

Heart Attack Symptoms
(call 911 immediately)

  • Pressure in your chest
  • Pain or discomfort in the chest spreading to the arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Sick to your stomach
  • Cold sweat

Stroke Symptoms (call 911 immediately)

  • Sudden blurry vision or trouble speaking
  • Severe headache and/or dizziness
  • Sudden weakness or numbness, especially occurring on one side of the body

Prevention is the key!

  • Blood pressure screenings the first Friday of each month from 9 a.m. to Noon at St.Mary’s Medical Center in Charlotte Hall and the second Friday of the month from 9 a.m. to Noon in the front lobby of the hospital.
  • Presentations on CVD, healthy lifestyles, stroke, heart disease and diabetes, weight management, exercise, cholesterol, heart healthy eating, DASH diet and women and heart disease.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Classes
    • We Can (Ways to enhance children’s activity and nutrition)
    • Small Steps, Big Rewards (PreDiabetes/Diabetes information)
    • Diabetes Walk and Talk
    • Smoke Free for Life
  • Health Connections Outreach center travels to various locations throughout the county. Health Education and promotion are provided as well as free blood pressure screenings, total blood cholesterol, A1C and body composition analysis. The Outreach Center is also available free to come to your community event or business.

Physical examinations, disease prevention and treatment, healthy lifestyle education, case management, diagnostic testing and lab services. Fee based on a sliding scale determined by the client’s income.

Cardiovascular Disease Community Resource
  • Home health services are provided to patients recently discharged from the hospital. Nursing and therapy staff visit patients in the home and provide education about CVD and ways to manage their disease. Home Health services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurances. Services may be provided at no cost to qualified patients.

  • Medical clinic for diabetic and hypertensive clients. The clinic serves men and women age 40 to 64 who are underinsured or uninsured. The fee is five dollars. The clinic provides comprehensive physical assessments, medication management and education promoting lifestyle changes. The client is placed into the private sector for follow up care.

Services provided free to you, your group, workplace or organization

Cardiovascular Disease Community Resource
St. Mary’s County Health Department

  • Free blood pressure screenings done at your workplace, organization or event.
  • Blood pressure screenings are offered free at the Health Department Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. No appointment necessary.
  • Presentations on hypertension (high blood pressure), tobacco use prevention (all ages), heart attack and stroke symptoms.
  • Displays on hypertension (high blood pressure), tobacco use prevention (all ages), heart attack and stroke symptoms.
  • Body fat screening. The amount of body fat varies considerably for men and women.There are some standards considered safe and acceptable for good health.
  • Smoking cessation classes are offered in partnership with St. Mary’s Hospital. This is an 8 week course in which participants can get free Nicoderm patches while attending classes to assist them in quitting their tobacco habit.
