Things to Consider

Choosing a physician is an important decision.  If you are new to the area and have not yet received medical care, you may find it helpful to establish a relationship with doctor before you become ill.  In the event that you require assistance, your physician will be able to quickly assess your situation and provide treatment options that best suit you.

When selecting a physician, there are a number of considerations to keep in mind.  Some health insurance plans require that your primary care physician be an internist, pediatrician or family practitioner.  Because each plan can vary, it’s important to check with your provider before selecting a doctor.

If you have children, you may feel most comfortable receiving care from a pediatrician.   These physicians specialize in caring for patients from infancy through the teenage years.  Or, for convenience, you might prefer one doctor who can treat the whole family. Both general practitioners (G.P.) and family practitioners (F.P.) have completed a multi-year residency and will be responsible for your entire family's health needs.  Should you require further care, these individuals will refer you to specialists as necessary.

At St. Mary's Hospital we have a wide selection of specialties and primary care doctors to choose from. You can consult our online physician directory, or call our Medical Staff Office at 301-475-6088 to speak with someone who can provide you with a referral.

Establishing a Relationship
No matter which type of doctor you choose, there are certain things you can do to ensure that the relationship between you and your physician is a good one:

Be Honest. Your physician can't give you the proper care without accurate information.  Because your personal health history is kept confidential, you should feel comfortable sharing information that will assist your caregiver.  Find a doctor with whom you are at ease, and establish an open and truthful relationship.

Speak Up. Medical treatment can be complicated, but you have the right to take an active stand in your healthcare.  Asking questions shows your doctor that you are interested and listening.  And, by taking an active stand in your treatment, you’ll feel better and ensure that you’re receiving the best possible care for you.

Be Informed. Make sure you understand your doctor's philosophy. Do you know how his or her office handles matters like scheduling and billing?  If you’re unsure, take a moment to speak with the office staff.  They’ll be happy to explain their policies and you’ll establish a positive working relationship.
