Founded in 1975, the St. Mary’s Foundation has provided a vital source of funding for capital improvements and most importantly, the healthcare scholarship program. The Foundation is committed to raising and receiving funds to support and strengthen the mission of St. Mary’s Hospital. The Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees, with its members comprised of a cross section of area business, community and medical leadership.

Each year, the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation organizes events to generate funds for the scholarship program. Not only do these fundraisers draw together community members, but they also establish the awareness for the scholarship program and encourage interested individuals to consider a career in healthcare. These Foundation sponsored events have become so popular within Southern Maryland that community members not only look forward to them but they often sell out in advance.
The Foundation is developing more events to provide long-range support for the scholarship program and additional hospital projects. Such events will encompass various opportunities for both family-friendly and elegant enjoyment venues. Two of our most popular events are the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Gala and the Epicurean Experience.

As our region grows and prospers, the need for quality healthcare has grown proportionately. The St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation is focused on our area’s healthcare needs and is dedicated to providing a bright future for our hospital and the people it serves. Since 2001, the Foundation has funded dozens of scholarships for deserving healthcare students in the community in an effort to reduce the nationwide shortage of healthcare professionals. Additionally, this program provides an avenue for talented local students to pursue their educational goals.
Between 2001 and 2005, scholarships were open solely to nursing students. However, in 2006, students interested in pursuing Allied Health careers were encouraged to apply. After broadening its spectrum, the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation received applications from a large number of talented scholars. Through the generous support of area residents, businesses and organizations, the Foundation looks forward to bringing high quality healthcare to Southern Maryland.
“...The scholarship was helpful in covering my expenses. I had a full time position at the hospital when I graduated. I am glad I can stay in the community where I grew up. I encourage students to take advantage of this and similar opportunities to pursue their career goals.”
Nicole Schuhart, Allied Health Scholarship recipient |

“The SMH scholarship was great, I was able to stay focused on my studies, knowing that the hospital would cover my tuition, books and fees.”
