Services

Hospice of St. Mary's cares for the whole person and their family as one unit. Hospice supports the patient and family- assisting them in meeting their goals for end-of-life care. Hospice support includes:

  • Hospice Medical Director reviews, coordinates and oversees the management of medical care for all patients in the hospice program.
  • Patient's Attending Physician continues to provide initial and ongoing medical services to the patient.
  • Registered Nurses provide sophisticated pain and symptom management and caregiver education. The RN coordinates the provision of medical equipment, supplies and medications.
  • Nurses are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to answer questions, offer advice and make personal visits
  • Medical Social Workers assist families in identifying their personal and community resources and developing support networks to aid in coping with a life-limiting illness.
  • Hospice Aides, under the supervision of the Hospice RN, provide patients with personal care and assistance as needed with the activities of daily living.
  • Therapists provide additional types of therapy such as physical, occupational, speech and respiratory, when medically indicated.
  • Complementary therapies such as music therapy, Reiki, and massage offered to meet the needs of patients.
  • Hospice provides all medications related to the hospice diagnosis and needed to provide comfort.
  • Trained volunteers offer assistance with the activities of daily living and friendly support, companionship and encouragement to patients and family members.
  • Durable Medical Equipment needed to keep the patient safe and comfortable- including hospital beds, oxygen, walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs etc.
  • Continuous care provided in the home (by RNs and aides) during periods of medical crisis as necessary to maintain the patient at home.
  • Acute short term in-patient care provided for any symptoms that cannot be managed at home.
  • Hospice Chaplains provide counseling or will arrange for counseling to meet the spiritual needs of patients and families in a manner consistent with their beliefs and desires.

Hospice House

The Hospice House of St. Mary's is a place of dignity, comfort and peace. At times, individuals with terminal illnesses need care that cannot be provided in their own homes. For these individuals, Hospice House offers care and a place to call home. Hospice House of St. Mary's is the first of its kind in our county, thanks to the many community members and organizations that helped to turn the vision of the house into a reality. This attractive residence, located on 23 acres of wooded land in Callaway, offers a country kitchen, great room, dining room for special family gatherings and a meditation room. Spacious private bedrooms include a large bathroom, Volker patient beds, a double sleeper sofa and comfortable seating, as well as French doors to private patios and/or a huge deck overlooking beautifully landscaped grounds.

When might Hospice House care be appropriate?

Many situations may occur in which Hospice House care would be appropriate; however, the most likely scenarios would be if the patient lives alone, if the patient has a caregiver who is unable to continue care for his or her loved one at home, and/or if there are intense pain and/or symptom management needs.

What amenities do we offer?

Residents and their loved ones will relax in one of our six peaceful bedroom suites complete with private bathrooms and common areas.

Other amenities include a spacious community living room, an open deck with a breathtaking view of our rural 23-acre property and a beautifully landscaped memorial garden.

Patient meals are prepared daily by staff or Hospice volunteers in a country-style kitchen. Meal planning is under the oversight of a registered dietitian.

What costs are involved?

Hospice does not turn anyone away for inability to pay. Although hospice care is covered by insurance, insurance does not cover room and board charges at Hospice House. Room and board will be assessed at a flat rate with a sliding fee scale based on the patient's ability to pay.

How can you help?

Volunteers are always needed to prepare meals, maintain cleanliness, do errands and maintain the yard. Volunteers can be of any age but must provide their own transportation.
