Every day, dozens of Hospice volunteers help their neighbors through some of life's most difficult moments. For example, patient care volunteers offer hope, listen, run errands, give family caregivers much needed breaks, and in a hundred ways both large and small make a difference in their community.
Other Hospice volunteers give their professional services, help to raise funds, work in the Hospice office, and assist with special events.
For those willing to help, Hospice of St Mary's offers a free Volunteer Training Course. The program prepares volunteers for Hospice work, looking at issues related to death and dying with dignity. The initial course is a four hour BootCamp which enables the individual to volunteer at the Hospice House, nursing homes, administrative help in the office and fundraising events. Additional training is offered for those who want to volunteer directly in a patient's home.
Highlights of Volunteer training include:
- Cultural Diversity
- Role of the Volunteer
- Spirituality
- Legal rights of patients
- Practical needs of patients and families
- Wills/Living Wills and Advance Directives
- Bereavement care
- Proper body mechanics
- Feeding a patient
