Imaging
In recent years, St. Mary's Hospital acquired some of the most state-of-the-art medical equipment available. The Imaging Department offers a full complement of procedures, including X-ray, mammography, angiography, bone densitometry, ultrasonography, CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT scans.
The Mammography Suite exceeds FDA requirements and offers evening hours and reduced cost or no-cost mammograms for eligible patients. Used to diagnose and treat individuals with a variety of disorders, including peripheral vascular disease, the hospital’s equipment is on par with what is used in major medical treatment facilities around the country.
Ultrasound, CT and Nuclear medicine scans are available 24 hours a day. The department, which recently added a second CT scanner, is staffed around the clock to cover Emergency Care Center cases.
In May of 2005, SMH acquired a General Electric 4-D Ultrasound unit, the LOGIQ-9. The 4-D ultrasound made headlines in recent years for its ability to show expectant parents live, moving images of their developing baby. And while these images are exciting for mothers and fathers-to-be, they are also a valuable tool for detecting birth defects and other fetal medical issues.
Beyond obstetrics, 4-D ultrasound’s live video footage helps healthcare professionals detect or rule out a wide range of potential medical problems in patients and gives surgeons a better visual image of the areas they will be treating. The advanced, ergonomic design of the latest 4-D machines also makes ultrasound scanning more comfortable for patients.
MRI services are offered by appointment. A recent MRI expansion near the Emergency Care Center allows patients to receive diagnostic testing in close proximity to their examination room, and frees the hospital’s other MRI suite for scheduled appointments. The result is shortened waiting times and faster diagnoses for all.
St. Mary's Hospital hosts a mobile PET/CT scanner one day per week. This combination PET/CT scanner is more powerful than positron emission tomography or computed tomography alone, making it a key diagnostic imaging tool for detecting a wide variety of diseases, including cancers. The hospital is excited to bring these new technologies to Southern Maryland and looks forward to offering patients the most innovative treatment techniques available.
