Intensive Care

The St. Mary's Hospital Intensive Care Center (ICC) is designed for patients who have serious illnesses and require closer nursing care than can be allocated on a general nursing floor. This is a highly specialized area, which requires the most advanced nursing skills and knowledge. Our facility's ICC staff is specially trained in critical care and in the function and operation of highly sophisticated equipment. To reach a member of our staff, please call 301-475-6200.

Why is a Patient Admitted to the Intensive Care Center?

Patients are admitted to ICC because they need intensive nursing and medical care. In this area of our facility, we are able to provide a very low ratio of nurse to patient ratio and offer a wide range of life supporting therapies. We understand the concern you may have for a loved one while they are in our Intensive Care Center and encourage you to turn to us when you have questions.

Selecting a Family Spokesperson

The cooperation of family and friends is essential for the proper care of patients in the Intensive Care Center. Families should select one member to communicate with the physician and nurses and keep other family members informed of the patient's condition. Having one spokesperson helps to ensure clear and accurate communication between the nurse, physician and family and allows our staff to spend more time caring for patients.

Personal Belongings and Dietary Restrictions

Due to limited space, we ask that most personal belongings be left at home. However, the patient is welcome to keep his own brush, comb, deodorant, shaving cream, toothbrush and toothpaste. Most patients are also placed on a special diet by their physicians. Therefore, we request that family members do not bring in any food or beverages.

Visiting Hours

It is our philosophy that the visitation of family and friends is important and therefore should be available as much as possible. On a case-by-case basis, limitations may need to be made due to the clinical condition of the patient, or at the patient's request.

Please feel free to use the visitors lounge located outside the ICC. When you are ready to visit, please pick up the phone in the waiting area; the nurse will respond as quickly as possible to tell you when you may visit.

Visitors may not be present during a Code Blue unless deemed appropriate by the physician in charge of the code. Visiting children must be attended by an adult, other than the patient. Children may not be left unattended with patients and must be without a fever.

Family or significant others are welcome to stay overnight with their loved ones. It is requested that only one guest remain overnight in the patient room.  A sofa bed is available in most patient care areas for this purpose.  When additional guests desire to stay overnight, alternative accommodations will be suggested on a case-by-case basis.  However, St. Mary's Hospital is not obligated to accommodate an overnight stay.

While You Visit

For the safety and security of our patients and their families, all visitors to the inpatient areas must sign in at the front desk, and wear a visitor’s badge. The badge should be displayed on a visible article of clothing throughout your visit.

Smoking is not permitted within the hospital.  Non-patients may use a designated smoking area located at the rear of the hospital.
