Laboratory

Laboratory staff members use finely tuned skills, knowledge and experience to diagnose illness and offer a course of action.  They can detect disease, document the affects of drug therapy and scientifically analyze overall health.  Today, more than 2,000 laboratory tests are available.  The traditional microscopic examination in the laboratory is now complemented by a variety of sophisticated technologies, such as the electron microscope and genetic analysis of chromosomes.

The nature of a laboratory's role in patient care keeps the St. Mary's Hospital Laboratory open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  A staff of professionals, including a pathologist, Dr. Yahia Tagouri, performs and analyzes well over a quarter million tests each year. In addition to the hospital’s in-house laboratory, several satellite locations make testing convenient to patients.  Please call each facility to set an appointment.

The St. Mary's Hospital Laboratory is accredited by the Joint Commissions on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the College of American Pathologists, and the American Association of Blood Banks. It holds a clinical Laboratory Improvement Act License from the State of Maryland and the Health Care Finance Administration.

Science in Action at St. Mary's Hospital

The St. Mary's Hospital Laboratory is divided into several sections: Pathology and Histology; Hematology; Coagulation; Urinalysis; Blood Bank; Microbiology; and Clinical Chemistry.

  • In Pathology, the pathologist, aided by histology technicians, studies tissue samples to determine the cause of disease and changes in cell/and or organ structure and function.
  • Hematology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis study blood components (white blood cell, red blood cells, platelets, and plasma), blood-forming tissues, and clotting factors.  Staff members also perform urinalysis testing, searching for the presence of glucose and other factors, including signs of infection like blood cells and bacteria.
  • The Blood Bank maintains a safe and adequate supply of whole blood and blood products, including platelets and plasma.  This division is also responsible for patient blood typing and antibody screening.
  • Microbiology identifies four categories of microorganisms: bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts, and parasites.  Once classified, the pathogen is tested against various antibiotics to determine the most effective way to battle the disease.
  • The Clinical Chemistry division measures chemical and biologically active components found in body fluids. Glucose, cholesterol, and cardiac and liver enzyme levels are some of the most common measurements requested.
