One Dose at a Time

Today's healthcare providers are continually on the lookout for new ways to improve the quality and safety of care. And the team of pharmacists at St. Mary's Hospital is no exception. "We carry over 1,700 line items and receive several hundred requests for medication every single day of the week," says Tom Jackson, Director of the Pharmacy at St. Mary's Hospital. "Meeting the constant demand was no small feat."

Since 1993, SMH has researched new and innovative ways of streamlining its medication distribution process.  When the opportunity arose to install a new automated dispensing system that would change the way medication was distributed throughout the hospital, the staff collectively agreed that it would be an exciting move forward.  Known as Pyxis, this technology is much like a computerized vending machine.  Each system consists of a computer – the “brains” of the unit – and a series of drawers containing the medications.  After a prescription is entered into the computer, the unit dispenses the medicine in its exact dose.  Nurses can easily extract the medication and quickly deliver it to the waiting patient.  The Pharmacy is then electronically notified of the withdrawal so that the dispenser can be refilled.

Advances such as these are keeping St. Mary's Hospital at the forefront of medical technology and is one of the many ways in which the SMH is looking forward to better serving the community.
